01 Selected Work

Projects built to be used, not just looked at.

Both projects below are self-directed portfolio concepts — designed and built by me to demonstrate how I approach real small-business websites. They are not paid client work.

Challenge

Landscaping is a local, seasonal, trust-driven service. A visitor usually arrives from a phone, already half-decided, and needs two things fast: proof the work is good, and an obvious way to ask for a price.

Approach

I built the page around a single conversion path rather than a long brochure. Services are grouped into three scannable categories, the quote request is never more than one tap away, and the layout was designed mobile-first so the desktop version is the expansion — not the other way around.

Key Features

  • Mobile-first navigation with a persistent quote-request action
  • Repeated, contextual CTA placement at each natural decision point
  • Short quote flow that asks only for what is needed to give a price
  • Keyboard-navigable interface with visible focus states and alt text
  • Fluid layouts that reflow rather than shrink between breakpoints

Technology

Hand-written HTML, CSS and vanilla JavaScript — no framework and no build step, which keeps the page light and makes future edits straightforward.

Challenge

Detailing packages are easy to over-explain. The concept needed to present several tiers of service without turning the homepage into a price list, while staying editable by an owner who would never open a code editor.

Approach

I built it in WordPress using native Gutenberg blocks and reusable patterns, so every section can be duplicated, reordered or reworded from the editor. Packages are presented as three comparable cards with one consistent action — request an appointment — rather than competing buttons.

Key Features

  • Block patterns the owner can reuse for new services or seasonal offers
  • Package cards with parallel structure, so options compare at a glance
  • Appointment request as the single repeated call-to-action
  • Mobile layout treated as the primary case, since most traffic is phone-first
  • Content structured with real headings so the page stays screen-reader friendly

Technology

WordPress with the Gutenberg block editor, built with native blocks and theme settings rather than a page-builder plugin — fewer dependencies to maintain.

03 Process

Four steps, no mystery.

  1. Understand

Learn about the business, customers, and goals.

  2. Plan

Determine the pages, content, and best platform.

  3. Design & Build

Create the website and optimize it across devices.

  4. Review & Launch

Make revisions, test everything, and prepare the site for launch.

04 About

A Practical Approach
to Better Websites.

My name is Surya Kumar. I build websites for small businesses and organizations, working in both WordPress and custom front-end development depending on what the project actually calls for.

I care about websites that are visually polished, responsive, easy to understand, and genuinely useful to the business behind them. That usually means fewer pages rather than more, plain language over marketing filler, and a layout that makes the next step obvious on a phone as well as a laptop.

I'm a university student, and I take that as a reason to be thorough rather than a headline: I test across screen sizes, keep the code readable, and hand over something you can keep using without needing me for every small change.

  • Direct communication. You talk to the person doing the work.
  • The right platform. WordPress when you need to edit it yourself; custom code when you need the flexibility.
  • Built to hand over. Clear structure, documented, and yours to keep.
